Pátria (Homeland) is the National
Anthem of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.
The author of the lyrics was Francisco Borja da Costa and the song
composed by Afonso Redentor Araújo in 1975. It was officially adopted
the 28th November 1975, when the new Country proclaimed, unilaterally,
it’s independence from the colonial power Portugal.
Indonesia invaded Timor-Leste the 7th December 1975 and Francisco Borja
da Costa killed the very same day.
Pátria could be freely sung in Timor-Leste as National Anthem the 20th
May 2002, the Day of the Restoration of Independence from Indonesia,
after 24 years of occupation.
The lyrics are originally in Portuguese. There is not, so far, a version
in Tétum, the National and co-official Language.
